Taemon and Amma set out for the Republik to rescue Taemon's father. They meet an unexpected friend, but must keep a secret from him. Taemon thought that taking away everyones' psi would make his city a better place, but the people haven't changed. And now a new danger looms.

Archon is the second book in the Psi Chronicles. There is a decidedly different feel to this book, maybe since so much of it is away from Deliverance and the journey to the Republik. Yet this is a well-paced adventure with plenty of suspense, intrigue, and drama. Fans of dystopic novels should definitely check these out. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and look forward to the next in this stirring series.

This is a book that should be on your shelf IF:

-you are a beginning beekeeper. The text explains both concepts and procedures simply and clearly with enough detail to be thorough without being overwhelming. The photos are clear and close-up, and they allow the book to transcend from just another text to something much closer to mentoring by an experienced beekeeper.

- you are an experienced beekeeper. I have been a hobby beekeeper for about a dozen years and have read a multitude of books and articles. But I am still finding nuggets of new information and advice in a text comprehensive enough to function as a quick reference and conversational enough to be as much fun as a visit with a fellow enthusiast. The photos illustrate the text well but there are many more included which capture the beauty of the bees and their world- in full color and larger-than-life detail that allow you to savor both.

-you are looking for a book to share with children which goes beyond the ultra-simplified explanations found in many kids books and which is also visual enough to engage them.

-you are intrigued with beekeeping and wonder what it's all about. The text and photos are engaging and accessible- inviting you to flip through dipping in and out at will or dive in fully for a complete tour.

In short, this book is a marriage of both the science and beauty of beekeeping. But it is the photos which set this book in a class by itself. They, alone, would more than justify the price.

User-friendly guide with stunning photography

Although I already had 3 beekeeping books, I added this one to my library due to its concise approach, friendly advice, and stunning photographs. With this book, you don't have to wade through pages and pages to learn about a topic, only to find yourself without real guidance about a particular concern. Instead, the Traynors' book is well-organized and presents succinct, sensible advice distilled from the authors' vast beekeeping education and experience. By way of example, there is a chapter on essential equipment for keeping bees. Any new beekeeper looking at a catalog from a major supplier is likely to have his or head spin from the volume of equipment and options. The Traynors let you know what is essential and among various options, what they recommend. The chapter ends with an "essential shopping list for beekeeping." In purchasing this book, I valued this nuts and bolts approach to beekeeping. Additionally, the photography is impressive. It seems often the case with field guides that you have to make a choice between drab illustrations and photographs that poorly capture what the guide attempts to show. (What is that photograph supposed to be showing me?) Not the case with this book. Each photo shows clearly--and beautifully-- what the related text explains. One of my favorite photographs is the full page kaleidoscopic photo of a frame of stored pollen. The photos alone could awe someone into wanting to learn about bees.

Best book for beginners.

I own quite a few books on beekeeping.

This is the best one for the beginner. I learned so many practical things that help me to do what I do more effectively. The authors anticipate my questions and take nothing for granted. The book is beautifully illustrated with very powerful teaching photos which really supplement the text very effectively.

If I could only recommend one book for the beginning beekeeper, this would be it.

Also, get and really study a copy of Beekeeper's Handbook.

With these two and a friendly beekeeper ( contact your local county or state association) you will be on good footing.

About the Author

Vicki Elmer is currently the Director of the Oregon Leadership in Sustainability (OLIS) graduate program at the University of Oregon where she teaches about sustainability and the urban environment. Before that she taught at UC/Berkeley’s Department of City and Regional Planning for ten years. Dr. Elmer was also a planning director and public works director in the City of Berkeley, and City Manager in Eugene, Oregon and was the head of research at HUD’s San Francisco office.

Elmer’s current research is on the intersection of compact urban design, water recycling and the water-energy-waste nexus. She is on the International Water Association’s Cities of the Future Committee and the Water Environmental Research Foundation’s committee on sustainable wastewater management. Her B.A. is from the University of Michigan (1964), MS: Columbia University (1970) PhD: University of California (1991).

Adam Leigland is currently the Director of Public Works for Santa Fe County, New Mexico, where he is responsible for the provision, operation, and maintenance of roads and trails, water and sewer service, solid waste management, public facilities, and parks and open space. Prior to that, he was the Deputy Director of Public Works for a NATO air base in northern Italy, a senior transportation planner at the San Francisco County (California) Transportation Authority, and a civil engineering officer in the U.S. Air Force with service all over the world. He holds a B.S in civil engineering from the University of Notre Dame, and an M.S. in civil engineering and an M.C.P. in city planning, both from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a registered professional engineer in New Mexico, California, and Arizona, and a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners.

Very insightful and informative

All of the bio info on Greg seems to indicate that he possesses the skill set and body of knowledge that would qualify him to write authoritatively on the subject that he addressed in his book. He holds a Masters Degree from the University of Pittsburgh and has an impressive resume. Greg has experience in all the facets of music ministry such as being a church musician, composer, and a director of choirs and praise bands. He also has experience teaching as a music professor. By all accounts, Greg seems to be a good model music minister (although I do not know him personally, nor have I ever worked with him).

Greg's book is quite comprehensive insofar as that it covers most (if not all) of the aspects of music ministry in a church. The fact that his book has 51 foot notes demonstrates that he did his homework. His book covers:
� The potential hazards and pitfalls a church may encounter when making the transition to a contemporary service format with a praise band;
� The details to consider when putting together a praise team and making it effective in a church service;
� How to select songs and build a repertoire;
� The different formats in a church service and how adapt style to structure;
� Each instrument's role and dynamic in the praise band;
� How to prepare and conduct rehearsals;
� And finally, how to lead the singing during the actual service.

The book gets quite technical in some parts. Greg shows his vast knowledge of music theory when he elaborated on the various types of modulations a praise band could do in the last eight pages of chapter four. He even provides scores of these modulations to illustrate his point. Greg also did the same thing in chapter five when he devoted about eight pages to elaborate on the different types of harmonies the vocalist can use. Greg provided a lot of insight and analysis to many of today's popular praise songs. He addressed their lyrical content and musical style while also demonstrating a knowledge mainstream pop music.

I love the cover of the book. It has a photo of a five piece drum set (brand name unknown) accompanied by three crash cymbals, a hi-hat and ride cymbal (brand name of cymbals unknown). I could not have selected a better cover design myself.

In chapter 5, Greg gives an analysis on all the typical instruments that could be used in a praise band. He elaborates on each instrument's distinctives and how they contribute to the overall dynamic. For the most part, I thought Greg did a pretty good job of breaking down all the instruments and their specific roles.

Overall, I think Greg's book is very good and his book would be very useful for those who want to be involved in praise ministry in any capacity.

essential for all worship pastors

Greg Scheer's immensely practical book hooked me in the first paragraph. Full of wisdom and practical insight, my copy has bright yellow highlighter marks on every page because there is so much I want to return to again and again. This book, with Kevin Navarro's "The Complete Worship" leader, are essential reading for all worship pastors, especially in a contemporary environment.

RMS Titanic has had more written about her than any other ship but, surprisingly, there is a little information directed at the modelmaker. This new book contains all the information needed to build a highly accurate model down to the tiniest details of the hull's rivets. The book is based on the author's own remarkable 20ft model, specially commissioned for a traveling exhibition throughout North America. It contains a mass of practical information on how to construct every part of the great liner and is equally applicable to a small static bread-and-butter display model as to a large working version. It is highly illustrated with superb close-up photographs of the model, detailed drawings by the author and a large collection of photographs of the prototype herself, some of which have never been published before. In addition, the book contains a complete set of plans of the Titanic which are considered to be the most accurate yet drawn. With its mix of practical information, rare photographs and highly-detailed drawings this book will appeal to all Titanic enthusiasts as well as to ship modelers of every sort.

wonderful but

I agree that this is a WONDERFUL book. However, be aware that the "plans" on the inside cover are not enough and that on the 1:300 scale drawing, a large portion has been left out--the uniform area of the hull before the last funnel and to just before the foredeck. without a plan view, the body plan is of not so much use . There is a basic plan view on pg x that could be scaled up then you are home free.
The major pluses are the very many scale drawings or detail all to a standard based on 1:48--doubled, halved or whatever. The photos of the model are great because they provide clarity that shipboard photos do not generally.
That said, there are plans in John Bowen's book Miniature Merchant Ships and general arrangement plans in McCluskie's books (and they are also filled with great photos and clear details not to be missed. As noted, the drawings are generally of the "Olympic "class and only detail drawings are apparently available for the Titanic.
There are likely things here that are standard shipbuilding practise so the details in this book could likely be used on other H&W ships or other merchant ships of the period, especially where no detail drawings are available. For example, the stern on the Titanic is not much different from the stern and forefoot on the Bavarian of 1869--H&W yard No 68 (Titanic was Yard No 400). This suggests that where no plans exist, those of the T could likely be modified for other hulls of the same period.
This is a book not to be missed by any modeller and MR Davies-Garner has done a great service to all modellers by setting an example of the kind of work that should be standard.

A Very Detailed Book

This modestly sized handbook is a real boon for model builders or ship enthusiasts. There aren't many colour photos, but for a manual on model building the only colour photos needed for paint schemes are there. Additional photos of the finished model on display are also included. Detailed drawings of the deck spaces are shown with detailed written instructions, and rather smallish b/w photos as to how construction was pursued. I was hoping for a larger book with larger photos, but that's asking for a lot these days. One might even be able to transfer the same techniques for use in building other models, but one would have to have some detailed drawings/plans of those ships.

I'm not sure if I could ever have the time or resources to undertake a larger model, but this will help anyone with a plastic model who wants an alternative detailed painting instruction other than those with the plastic model kit. At any rate, it's interesting to see how this was done.

Must have reference for building a Titanic Model

Like many ship modelers, I have always had a fascination with the three Olympic class liners, and particularly that most famous of the three, the Titanic. Of course, many are drawn to her story and tragically short life, but I have always been fascinated by her appearance - in my estimation, she was one of the most beautiful ocean liners ever built.

Over the years, I have made a couple of attempts at capturing her in miniature, but was not satisfied the results. One core problem has been the lack of reference material. The discovery of the ship and the subsequent James Cameron film has sparked massive amounts of interest in her, and a result has been the publication of many books, plans and websites on all things Titanic. The amount of research that has been done in the last decade has finally allowed highly accurate models of this ship to be built. This book documents a very impressive feat of the model shipwrights craft, a 1/48 scale Titanic that is some 18 feet in length.

Starting with a brief summary of the prototypes story, and quickly progressing into research and building, Peter Davies-Garner has written a no nonsense documentation of the model. The author touches on every area of the build, but some more thoroughly than others - a necessary compromise to control the size no doubt, but I was left wanting more. The many photographs are really the core of the book, and the model is covered thoroughly in black and white with a central color section. If you see a high resolution scan of the cover, this is a classic case of not judging the book by it's cover - for some reason, it is a poorly reproduced digital image, whereas the photographs in the body are higher quality.

This is an important work to scholars of the Titanic. What I particularly appreciated was the author's clear differentiation of which areas are factual and which are educated conjectures. As he states, there will never be a totally accurate model of the ship built, but his must surely be the closest to that goal yet made. I highly recommend the book, and, if you are visiting Orlando, seeing the model in person.

Along the way, Lily discovers connections between her and Regan's world while developing a romantic relationship with him. Inglis blends light romance and urban fantasy with a touch of science-fiction. This action-packed work lacks thorough development of the fantasy world and an emotional connection to Lily. The plot is somewhat clunky and murky, and the characters don't feel fully formed. Still, the action and twists are enough to keep some readers engaged. The book ends wide open to the possibility of a sequel, which could potentially level out the story in future installments. Harry Potter fans will love this novel! It is twisty, brilliant and an extraordinary book with two- headed dogs and more!

When girls start to go missing in the City of London, Lily needs to find out once and for all who keeps taking the girls. Lily suddenly meets a boy named Regan, while she is getting attacked by banddogges (two-headed dogs). She realizes she is in a world with not only humans, but a lot more!

This book was fast-paced and a fun read.
