From Booklist
An academic, Grant explains that added to hard work, talent, and luck, highly successful people need the ability to connect with others. We learn givers give more than they get, takers get more than they give, and matchers aim to give and get equally; all can succeed. The author’s aim is to explain why we underestimate the success of givers, to explore what separates giver champs from chumps, and what is unique about giver success. Emphasis on teams and the rise of the service sector offers givers access to opportunities that takers and matchers often miss. In the first section, the author explains his principles of giver success, and, in the second part, with insightful stories he explores the costs of giving and how givers can protect themselves against burnout and becoming pushovers; helping others does not compromise success. Grant concludes with his hope that this book will provide his young daughters’ generation with a new perspective on success. A worthy goal for this excellent book. --Mary Whaley

Are You an Otherish Giver?
By Kevin Currie-Knight
I've been reading this book for a few days now - finished it yesterday - and I am already finding myself changing a bit of how I operate. According to the book, I am usually a matcher - one who gives reciprocally, when I figure I can receive in return. And there isn't much wrong with that. But, according to Adam Grant and his bevy of research, otherish givers are usually the most successful.

So, let me explain.

There are three broad styles of interpersonal dealing: taking, matching, and giving. Takers are those who try to take more than they give. Matchers are those who try to give and take proportaionally and conditionally. Givers are those who give more than they take. Takers are primarily self-oriented, matchers are other-oriented as a means to being self-oriented (I'll help you when I think you will help me) and givers are primarily other-oriented.

Here's the counter-intuitive part. If we look at the most successful people - the happiest, the most likely to be promoted, etc - they are generally givers, and if we look at the least successful, they too often tend to be givers. (Takers do moderately well, but over time, few want to deal with them. Matchers do okay too.)

This book is an attempt to explain why being a giver is a good 'strategy' for success, as well as under what conditions giving is a failing 'strategy.' First, the positive: simply put, people appreciate givers and giving often makes people want to give back. Since givers help others and often put others' needs as a priority, givers often garner (without deliberately trying - AND THAT IS KEY!) a network of support from others they've helped. Want to communicate most effectively? Ask more questions to others than you give answers, ask for advice, and be aware of how you can help others. Want to bring out the best in people around you? Believe in them by recognizing and appreciating their strengths and contributions. Want to be successful? Don't think of personal relations as zero-sum games (where others can only win to the degree you lose), but positive sum games (if you win, it doesn't mean that I lose, but we can all win together).

It sounds obvious, right? But it isn't. Even when we may be givers in our personal lives, we often become matchers or takers at work. Even if the success of a giving strategy seems intuitive, it is equally intuitive that getting ahead requires receiving as much as or more than you get, spending most of your time working on things that will obviously benefit you, and not spending more time assisting others at work than getting your own stuff done. But Grant cites a growing body of research showing that giving - under the right conditions - really is the best overall 'strategy.'

Of course, I said "under the right conditions." What are those conditions? Well, for starters, one must give with some sort of purpose. Those who don't see some sort of result from their giving often burn out. (So, fundraising telemarketers burn out less when they can talk with those who their efforts have helped, and teachers burn out less when they see what their more successful students go on to do.) Also, one must give to others and things that the giver is interested in. (Volunteering for projects and to help people I care about is much easier and fun than for those I care little about.) Lastly, one must watch out not to be exploited by takers, who can often seem like givers in their agreeableness, but be exploitative in the end. (And Grant gives some good advice on how to detect real givers versus takers who are good actors.)

So, all of this is what Grant calls 'otheerish giving.' Giving selflessly versus giving a bit selfishly is, Grant writes, what ultimately separates successful from unsuccessful givers. Give, but make sure one is giving with a sense of purpose, and to people and things one cares about. Give, but not when it comes AT THE EXPENSE of one's own projects.

And this is the one area of criticism I have for Grant's otherwise well-written and VERY interesting book. He doesn't do a great job distinguishing between matchers (those who give when they think there will be something for them in return), and otherish givers (those who give selectively). .On its face, I think I have an understanding of the difference, but the ideas are very closely related.

One other small area of criticism: does it make sense to urge others to give, but then point out that giving is a good strategy to success? If one adopts giving as a strategy for success, then doesn't that mean, in a sense, that they are takers (giving because they expect to gain more than they give ultimately)? Grant warns against this tendency, telling us that giving because one expects ultimate benefits - is often a self-defeating strategy that others can detect. But, doesn't the mere fact that Grant's whole point is to show that and how giving is ultimately a winning strategy mean that many people WILL adopt it somewhat artificially because they expect a payoff? (I don't see how its avoidable.)

Anyway, I did gain a lot from this book. Not only have I found myself monitoring some of my interpersonal dealings by the advice given in this book, but it's given me insights into what working styles many of my colleagues have (which affects how I deal with them). Very good book that not only conveys some very interesting research, but should be able to give people some good and usable advice.

Oh, and as a final teaser... chapter 3 explains why Jonas Salk - typically renowned as a giver for refusing to patent his polio vaccine - is actually a taker.

This is close to the best business book I have ever read
By Raymond Garcia
This is close to the best business book I have ever read. Every story had me reflecting on my own behavior and those of the people I work with. He defines several reciprocity styles, givers, takers, matchers, and fakers. It is far more nuanced than this as one reads the book full of research and anecdotal stories it is clear that all of these styles exist in everyone depending on the situation and circumstances and what is the interaction between the parties. Adam Grant simplifies the language to make it more accessible to the reader but on reflection one can easily understand that his simplistic portraits are far more complex than is being revealed. The main point is that giving is multiplier of success but it has its conditions trigger others to become givers as well. Having worked in many large corporations and reflecting on the premise of the book it is easy to understand those internal adversarial cultures and why the are toxic to the soul and the challenges that the HR departments have when trying to create a happy face environment. It is also clear that the main issue is with leadership and why the self appointed leaders can destroy value quickly by over valuing their own self image. Want to understand the problems with executive compensation and leadership, read this book, it won't be obvious at first but try and apply the concepts to an economic system of fairness and giving and it will be evident quickly.

If you live and work by the "Art of War" then this book is going to challenge many of your notions of ruthless winner and in place it might show how diplomacy with a hint of generosity wins over all else in the longer term.

Effective Leaders Ante Up First: Model Giving, Service!
By William N. Parker
This book is given high marks for its practical approach to the individual’s tendencies around giving and taking in life. Let’s assume that we are talking about folks who have strong senses of self and have overcome successfully some of life’s challenges that temporarily thwarted them. Doesn’t matter if it was overcoming a teacher’s seeing them as losers, being fired from one’s first part-time job, or losing a loved one.
I tended to look at this book through the lenses through which I am familiar: life experience, 40 years of white-collar work experience, marriage, parenting, formal education, ongoing self-development/study, personality/temperament (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, etc.), and the authors of insightful books like this one.
As applied to myself, the Adam Grant helped me appreciate the idea of being an authentic, consistent giver without becoming a door mat. The author sites numerous examples of individuals who suffered the consequences of doormatdom and overcame those tendencies. They became situational givers, more reasoned, analytical givers.
Deep thinking is not needed to realize when you’re about to be screwed by an individual or a system. If our amygdala begins to send fear signals out to our bodymind, we’d sure better listen. The pre-frontal cortex never needs come to the party! And watch out for the predatorial takers, because they are out there. (Trust first, but verify, is my own mantra.)
The author’s writing also helped me appreciate the fact that if one is giving authentically, consistently, and without reservation to a purpose that springs from one’s temperament and talents, they are on the right track! An example would be a high-school band instructor whose dedication to helping every band member be their very best produces eventual, ongoing, and positive win/win outcomes for individuals, families, schools, and even school divisions. Individual leaders like this never have to be concerned about being a doormat or being depleted of motivational energy. Feeling overworked at times? Yes. Periodically weary? Yes. Seeing flow-state performances by individuals and groups produces responses in the leader, which enable him/her to meet those performers “where they are” and provide for them the opportunities they need to continue to raise their game.
This book was cited, as I recall, in Laslo Block’s book about Google, Work Rules. I certainly appreciate, and have benefitted from, his recommendation.
When I first encountered the author’s term, “matchers”, I thought of the natural negotiating skills that the SP temperaments bring to the table, particularly the ESTP.

Sexuality (Key Ideas), by Jeffrey Weeks

For over twenty years, Sexuality has provided a cutting edge introduction to debates about sexualities, gender, and intimate life. Previous editions included pioneering discussions of the historical shaping of sexuality, identity politics, the rise of fundamentalism, the social impact of AIDS, the influence of the new genetics, ‘global sex’, queer theory, ‘sex wars’, the debates about values, new patterns of intimacy, and much more. In this new edition,

Jeffrey Weeks offers a thorough update of these debates, and introduces new concepts and issues. Globalization is now a key way of understanding the reshaping of sexual life, and is discussed in relation to global flows, neo-liberalism, new forms of opposition, cosmopolitanism and the heated debates around sex trafficking and sex tourism.Arguments about the regulation and control of sexuality, and the intersection of various dimensions of power and domination are contextualised by a sustained argument about the importance of agency in remaking sexual and intimate life. In particular, new forms of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer politics, and the high impact of the debates about same-sex marriage are explored. These controversies, in turn, feed into debates about what is ‘transgressive’, ‘normal’, ‘ordinary’; into the nature of heter-normativity; and into the meanings of diversity and choice. To conclude, the book turns to questions of values and ethics, recognition, sexual citizenship and human sexual rights.

This book displays the succinctness, clarity and comprehensiveness for which Jeffrey Weeks has become well known. It will appeal to a wide range of readers internationally.

How to Be a Normal Person, by TJ Klune

Gustavo Tiberius is not normal. He knows this. Everyone in his small town of Abby, Oregon, knows this. He reads encyclopedias every night before bed. He has a pet ferret called Harry S. Truman. He owns a video rental store that no one goes to. His closest friends are a lady named Lottie with drag queen hair and a trio of elderly Vespa riders known as the We Three Queens.

Gus is not normal. And he's fine with that. All he wants is to be left alone.

Until Casey, an asexual stoner hipster and the newest employee at Lottie’s Lattes, enters his life. For some reason, Casey thinks Gus is the greatest thing ever. And maybe Gus is starting to think the same thing about Casey, even if Casey is obsessive about Instagramming his food.

But Gus isn’t normal and Casey deserves someone who can be. Suddenly wanting to be that someone, Gus steps out of his comfort zone and plans to become the most normal person ever.

After all, what could possibly go wrong?

...And Not Laugh-Cry In Public While Reading This Book (or late at night, or over your cereal...)
By ShinyNickel
TJ Klune writes the absurd and genuine and touching like no other, but with "How to Be a Normal Person" he has created something lasting and ridiculously relevant to every single person whether they're heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, asexual or all those other -uals. He wrote something for hipster men. For lesbian senior citizens. For zombified internet service reps. For me. For you.

At its core, this is a romance. A romance between Gus and Casey? Absolutely! Mostly though, in my humble opinion, it's a romance between Gus and himself. No, it's nothing even remotely creepy, or kinky, but just good old fashioned self love. No! Not onanism...self appreciation? Acceptance? Sigh. You know what I mean. This isn't THAT kind of book. No sexy, sex-sex here, and somehow, the better for it.

I won't be dishing out any storyline summarizing because you really should ride shotgun with Gus for the full experience. There's so much ahead for you- grumpy shopkeepers with quirks galore, visiting writers who digs said quirks, good natured meddlers who may or may not be sisters or polygamous lesbians or sister polygamous lesbians. And, typical Klune style wit and worry and wistfulness. Enough to satisfy, no- quench- the desires of the most dedicated klunatics out there...

I think between all the laughing, and crying, and the ever painful laugh-cry, Klune discovered that little underfed spot in my heart and filled it. I hadn't expected that. The laughs and tears, yes, but not that deep, fully realized satisfaction. So, Gus and gang- thank you for being a friend. Your heart is true. You're a pal and a confidante.

Hey! Did anyone else squee with the Bear and Otter homage?!

Another fabulous book from this author!
By Heather
*4.5 stars*

Woah, where do I begin with this one?? An asexual stoner, a socially awkward video-store owner, and three lesbians/possibly sisters walk into a bar....

For those readers who are afraid that this book isn't a classic T.J. Klune book (aka, really, really funny with lots of feelz), never fear! T.J. still brought the laughs (I dare you not to crack a smile at stoner scrabble), and still brought lots of emotion. However, this is a more subdued T.J. Klune. A little more... understated. I actually thought it was an awesomely refreshing change of pace, and though this book felt SO T.J., it also felt more mature in a lot of ways.

Gus was an interesting character. He is quiet, he likes routine, and he fiercely misses his deceased stoner dad. He also hates Michael Bay and pickles... a lot. Though Gus comes out of his shell throughout the course of the book, I really enjoyed how unique he was from other characters that I've seen.

Casey was... I mean, how could I not love a sexy (yes, asexuals can be sexy!), scruffy, hipster with a great sense of humor and an outgoing personality? He was fun and engaging, and I loved how persistent he was with Gus. I also have a weakness for a stoner, as my friends and I went through some... *cough cough*... phases in college. High logic always makes me smile.

Normally T.J. Klune does awesome side characters, but here he really outdid himself. I ADOREDDDDDDD the lesbian/possibly sisters trio of tough motorcycle ladies that made up Gus's crew. I swear, they made the book for me in a lot of ways! What I wouldn't do to have a couple of tough bitches like them by my side. All of them, even Casey's friends, brought something interesting and fun to the table.

In terms of the romance, it was there and it was adorable! Casey brought out the personality and spark in Gus, and Gus was a quiet, loving rock for Casey. I loved their flirtations and their easy banter. The romance was lovely, very slow burn, and, as the blurb suggests, verrrryyyyyy G rated. In fact, if you are looking for something more explicit than a couple of kisses and some hugs, look elsewhere. I completely bought the romance, though I struggled a bit, if I'm being honest, with the whole asexuality aspect.

It is hard for me, being so far on the other end of the asexuality spectrum, to imagine a relationship with someone with whom even physical affection is difficult. A lot of the way I show and perceive love with my SO is through pats on the butt, spontaneous make out sessions, and feeling physical closeness to my husband. I'm a very affectionate, sensual person. Gus always asked permission to even hug Casey, and I simply could not imagine myself in that kind of situation. Now, I recognize that this is 100% my own issue and, in fact, this kind of incompatibility is discussed in the book, but it made the chemistry in the story feel a little less potent for me, if I'm being perfectly honest.

However, that being said, I think that Casey and Gus were a great match. Gus understood and respected Casey's limits implicitly and vice versa. I also appreciated how the book educated us readers a little on the sexuality spectrum without feeling too didactic. It flowed naturally with the story.

I think if you are looking for an offbeat, well done, super funny, sweet romance, you've found your match with this story. Though it is relatively low angst and shows a more subdued style, it still leaves a big impact with characters you won't soon forget.

One of the best books I have ever read. Sweet and hysterical!
By Mrs Readsalot
You should probably read this book by yourself or with people who are tolerant of frequent outbursts of laughter. At about the 40% point in the book, things just go so funny. The characters are funny, the things they say are clever and snarky. TJ Klune is a very gifted writer. How he can go from writing something that makes me guffaw and within seconds has me wiping away tears is just....amazing oh my god. :)

I love Gus. I love Casey. I really like Casey's friends. (Well, two of them, anyway.) The rest of the characters are fine, too, but they are not the stars, make no mistake. This story is all about Gus, Casey and Gus's mind.

Yeah, there's pot smoking in this book. I don't smoke pot. But you know what, it's written in a charmingly funny way. If that's not 'reality' I really don't care because it's fiction, which, btw, I read to escape from the problems in life.

Honestly, I read a lot. I like a lot of books. But I don't always s-l-o-w down my reading so it doesn't end too quickly. That's how I know it's a really good book. I slowed this one down a whole lot. And....I think I"ll read it again. It's just that well written and entertaining!

The Origins of the Modern World: A Global and Environmental Narrative from the Fifteenth to the Twenty-First Century (World Social Change)

This clearly written and engrossing book presents a global narrative of the origins of the modern world from 1400 to the present. Unlike most studies, which assume that the “rise of the West” is the story of the coming of the modern world, this history, drawing upon new scholarship on Asia, Africa, and the New World and upon the maturing field of environmental history, constructs a story in which those parts of the world play major roles, including their impacts on the environment. Robert B. Marks defines the modern world as one marked by industry, the nation state, interstate warfare, a large and growing gap between the wealthiest and poorest parts of the world, increasing inequality within the wealthiest industrialized countries, and an escape from the environmental constraints of the “biological old regime.” He explains its origins by emphasizing contingencies (such as the conquest of the New World); the broad comparability of the most advanced regions in China, India, and Europe; the reasons why England was able to escape from common ecological constraints facing all of those regions by the eighteenth century; a conjuncture of human and natural forces that solidified a gap between the industrialized and non-industrialized parts of the world; and the mounting environmental crisis that defines the modern world.

Now in a new edition that brings the saga of the modern world to the present in an environmental context, the book considers how and why the United States emerged as a world power in the twentieth century and became the sole superpower by the twenty-first century, and why the changed relationship of humans to the environmental likely will be the hallmark of the modern era—the “Anthopocene.” Once again arguing that the U.S. rise to global hegemon was contingent, not inevitable, Marks also points to the resurgence of Asia and the vastly changed relationship of humans to the environment that may in the long run overshadow any political and economic milestones of the past hundred years.

Review
Marks offers a new broad sweep of this period that significantly is not Eurocentric in approach. His book reflects the more recent advanced scholarship that considers the influence of Asia and departs from the traditional interpretation of the ‘Rise of the West’ or the ‘European Miracle’ as the foundation of the modern world. This book is extremely informative; the author delves into ecological issues that include critical contemporary questions, such as global warming, and occasionally population growths and declines, as in the horrific period appropriately labeled the ‘Black Death’ in the mid-14th century, an epidemic that affected three continents. Numerous maps of the world support the book's global theme, and Marks writes that for well over 1,000 years, the Indian Ocean ‘arguably was the single most important crossroad of trade and generator of merchant wealth in the world.’ The book's main topics are the expansion of the Russian, Chinese, and Ottoman Empires; the conquest of the Americas; the spread of Islam; the Industrial Revolution; and the rise of the US. This serious and important work, written in a historically conventional manner, is thoughtful, relevant to the present times, and well written. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels/libraries. (CHOICE)

In a mere 218 pages of accessible prose, Robert Marks distills world history of the past six centuries to its essence. Truly global in scope, and fully attentive to environmental contexts, this book is ideal for the classroom: it will provoke both thought and discussion—and occasional disagreement. (John R. McNeill, Georgetown University)

This third edition of The Origins of the Modern World accentuates the book’s strengths—especially by deepening its discussion of environmental change and of global inequality—while remaining compact, highly readable, and easy to connect with contemporary concerns. Fair-minded but not bland, it has a potential to spark classroom discussion that conventional textbooks rarely have, while providing a helpful basic narrative around which to organize an appealing world history class. (Kenneth Pomeranz, University of Chicago)

The Origins of the Modern World combines two virtues that most textbooks lack: concision and an actual thesis. Rather than assuming the voice of an omniscient narrator, Marks makes a compelling argument about the multiple causes and consequences—human and ecological—of modernity. My students actually read this text, grasp its arguments, and find it stimulating. (E. Taylor Atkins, Northern Illinois University)

Always the favorite when it comes to incisive world history agenda-setting, the third edition of The Origins of the Modern World has a more fully developed overview, one that is big on humans and the history of the environment and encourages critical thinking on a global scale. (Edmund Burke III, University of California at Santa Cruz)

This clearly written and engrossing book presents a global and environmental narrative of the origins of the modern world from 1400 to the present. Enlightening, thought provoking historical arguments that don't read like a history book.
By Amazon Customer
This is a superb book about world history, but it doesn't read like a history book. It has 2 primary arguments: 1. Contrary to popular opinion, "the West" (Europe and the United States) didn't dominate world history until about the 1850's. In contrast, "common knowledge" casts Europe, especially Spain, England, and Portugal, (and later the United States) as hegemonic since at least the time of Columbus' voyages around 1500. Mr. Marks' argument is both convincing and approachable because he provides a wide variety of metrics to demonstrate the East's (China, India and other Asian empires) superiority in areas such as technology, sophistication of trading networks, population, standards of living, and even sophistication of unwritten international contracts.

2. Second, Mr. Marks argues for magnifying the role of environment in world history. As with the the East/West thesis above, his argument is coherent and fact-based. From the initial point of departure (First Americans in the New World including Mesoamericans such as the Incas and Aztecs suffered up to 90% population loss due to diseases brought by the Europeans), and continuing forward (arguing that the production of synthetic nitrogen was among the most important events in human history, fueling the growth of Europe and the United States and making possible their rise over India and China, and that industrialization came first to England's in large part thanks to luckily being close to easily accessible sources of coal), luck and the environment helped accelerate the "rise of the West" more than many people think.

Given the recent rise of China as the world's premier economic superpower and the worlds' manufacturing center, a resurgent 4 Asian Tigers of the Southeast, and the possibility of India rising anew, the book may leave American readers wondering if we happen to be living at the end of a Western Golden Age, lasting from about 1850-1970, where the West happened to be dominant. This book is enlightening, interesting, and doesn't read like a "boring world history book." Five Stars.

Book was interesting, lots of good information. The author does a good job of skimming over a lot of details to get the main ideas across. I don't think the book is quite as revolutionary as the author makes it out to be, but is a good read.

It was a really helpful tool for me. I don't speak Japanese or any other second langauge for that matter but didn't want to appear as the "Ugly American" who only speaks English and makes no attempts at the native tongue when abroad. In fact I will now use all of the lanuage dictionaries when taking a vacation, it can't hurt.

Great!

I know people like to say don't go for Romaji but seriously sometimes it just works. Although I know my hiragana and katakana well enough to read I find it hard to flip through a dictionary with ease if the entry words are written in hiragana/katakana. It takes me awhile to sort out anything beyond the secondary letters out. I find I spend too much time in reciting the alphabet in my head to get to the correct sections. Romaji is just faster, and for now it works so I use it as my primary dictionary method. In that regard this dictionary does a great job for a beginning dictionary. It's succinct and easy to handle. I supplement this with the Kodansha's Furigana dictionary and it works out really well as the Kodansha one gives me detail and dept and lets me practice my alphabet.

Vary nice but small floops
By Mika R.
I got the hardcover addition, I love this book vary much! I wanted to see a bit more Japanese. But I'm happy regardless. It's all in Romaji and the Japanese that is in here is not hiragana it's a mix of katakana and kanji witch is nice for advanced students but I'm just learning hiragana. I got the hardcover book and it lookes half used. Their is a few scratches and the sticker took off some of the leather on the book. It's fine though no missing pages or anything. I like this book!

Edit: Definitely used. No one wrote in it or anything, just the pages are oldish, and the hardcover has scratches ect. I dont mind it, because its really minor. Its a great dictionary but I just thought I was buying it new. :)

The best J/E E/J I know of.
By songe
For the price, there's nothing better. Most of the Japanese/English dictionaries out there either have not nearly enough entries in them to be useful, or, their Japanese listings are written using Japanese alphabetical order (-KSTNHMYRWN). This can be maddening. Also, most of the dictionaries that are using Japanese alphabetical order also neglect to include definitions written in english letters. In other words, if you look up the word EGG, they will list as its equivalent "卵." They won't tell you how to say it (it's 'tamago' btw) . They also don't even bother to write it out in hiragana. They just show the Japanese character "卵." This dictionary, on the other hand, will show you the Kanji for words and then they also spell out the pronunciation of the words in Roman letters.

I have four of these dictionaries. I bought one, used it up, and then bought three more. I also bought a tube of very strong glue and glued my old one back together. I've been using it now for about 18 years. I can't praise the book highly enough.

The Day Guernica was Bombed: A Story Told by Witnesses and Survivors, by William L Smallwood

Twenty-one percent of the bombers and fighters of Franco's air force in the whole Iberian peninsula took part in the attack on Gernika. As a result of this fabulous display of power, 85.22 percent of the buildings in town were completely destroyed during the bombing of Gernika on Monday, April 26, 1937. It was market day and, as reported by the Basque Government, 1,654 deaths were recorded between April and June 1937, as a consequence of the attack. The authorities of the Francoist regime tried to erase all evidence of the bombing and made no effort to recover the bodies of the victims and to register the deaths. This book is the result of a person who started learning Basque in the sheep camps of Idaho in order to research the story of the Gernika bombing. In Mountain Home (Idaho) William Smallwood was baptized ?Basilio Egurtxiki? by Dr. John Bideganeta, a second-generation Basque and a distinguished citizen of the town. ?Egurtxiki? is the literal translation into Basque of Smallwood and the Basilio came from the man who was more of a father than any other man in his life, Basilio Yriondo, an ?amerikanua??a Basque sheepherder in the American West. In September of 1971 Egurtxiki came to Gernika to research his book on the bombing and, after earning the trust of the people, in the spring and summer of 1972 he managed to conduct seventy-four interviews with survivors of the bombing. The following fall and winter, primarily through the efforts of Maria Angeles Basabe, the number of interviews was increased to one hundred and twenty-four. They both risked much, for a person could be arrested and tortured for mentioning the bombing. All the interviews had to be conducted in absolute secrecy. Hitherto unknown, we are honored to publish the story, written in the words of the survivors, forty years later, and seventy-five years after the bombing.

An eye opening work
By Don Pelayo
I had studied the Spanish Civil War for years and was aware of the bombing of Guernica but this account made the bombing more than just an historical narrative, it made it personal. This was magnified since I have many Basque friends and the mother of one of them (who I knew quite well) was a person interviewed by the book's author. The book intimately showed the suffering brought on the people and I hadn't read anything quite like it before.
