About the Author
In the 1960s Paul Riley was the youngest painter to have his work exhibited at the Royal Academy. He has exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, the Royal Watercolour Society, and a number of private galleries. He is author of Flower Painting (North Light Books), Watercolour Landscapes (David Porteous Editions), and Watercolour Workshop (David Porteous Editions) and established the very successful Coombe Farm Studios Art Centre in Devon.

Every page is a thrill of lovely bright color. This book is filled with good advice and inspiration. The illustrations are amazingly diverse - many different pictures, usually (as opposed to 3 or 4 successive shots of the same picture at different stages).

Vernon Cooray is a leading Professor of lightning research at Uppsala University where his research interests include experimental and theoretical aspects of electromagnetic compatibility, electromagnetic wave propagation, lightning physics, lightning protection and the physics of electrical discharges. He is the vice president of the scientific committee of the International Conference on Lightning Protection and the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Lightning Research. The author not only views superconductivity as a macroscopic quantum state, as described by the Ginzburg-Landau phenomenological equation, but also recognizes that the fundamental entity is the paired electrons of the microscopic theory of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer. Special features include a treatment of varied phenomena in a simple way which keeps the microscopic theory of BCS in the background, and a thorough discussion of magnetic properties of type II superconductors, including dissipative effects and the use of twisted multifilamentary wires. After treating the fundamentals of the Josephson effects, an analysis is given of how the popular RF-biased SQUID magnetometer works. An extensive discussion of fluctuation effects is also included. Great on it's own, or part of a pair...

I am a grad student researching superconducting circuits for quantum information. Everyone in my lab uses this book as a reference so I bought it to use as my introduction to superconductivity theory. I like the book very much and would recommend it to anyone who has taken a graduate course in quantum mechanics.

Tinkham's basic theoretical development is clear and comprehensive, and the accompanying discussion is actually helpful. You can learn how to really extract information from a theory if you pay attention to how Tinkham works the BCS theory in chapter 3. There's a good reason this book is a classic. After just reading chapter 3 I was able to understand essentially everything I need to have an intelligent conversation with others in my research group.

I recommend this book along with Van Duzer's "Superconducting Devices and Circuit." While Tinkham is presumably a book on basic theory, and Van Duzer is presumably a book for applications, both books provide brilliant gems of insight in each other's domain. They make a great pair.

Prerequisits: Second quantization, basic solid state, and basic E&M. In short, a first year grad student's education is more than enough.

I was introduced to this book (1st edition) while in grad school (research in SC) and, in my collection of books related to this field, Tinkham's is all the way to the top.
If you are really serious about understanding SC theory, this one is a must have.

Full of Practical Tips

Very similar in style to his previous book "Speed Lead" so if you liked that one you'll like this one too.

The book deals essentially with three aspects of working in a Matrix -- Clarity, Co-operation and Control offering practical tips and advice on how to get the right balance in each area -- i.e. neither too much or too little of each. As well as the practical and pragmatic tips which I find very useful, I also like the fact that it contains many case studies are stories from business people from around the globe which illustrated what it takes to make it work, as well as the mistakes you can make.

This book is aimed at people who find themselves in a matrix and want to know what to do to make it work. I think it complements nicely Galbraith's book "Designing Matrix Organizations that Actually Work" which is more aimed at the Organizational Development Community. So I'd expect this book to have a wider audience.

I reorganized the Country team into a matrix organization. Also globally the company is moving to a matrix organization. Therefore the book provided many lessons and tools to enhance the effectiveness of both local and global team. Also provided me with several reflection points of how to be a more effective leader in this new world.
I took many notes comparing how we did put in place our local matrix and the expert advice from the book, and found several areas of learning and opportunities for improvement.

This book is amazing. I thought I knew most ways to get around on a 2-5-1 but this book goes into a lot more depth and has great ideas to expend your voicings etc. Worth buying for any musician serious about the music.

Cameron has consulted for Cartus Language Specialists in working on accent modification with the human resources departments of many international corporations who outsource technological help. Her clients have included foreign executives at American Express and actors wishing to perfect an American accent. She has taught nearly every accent in the world.

Mysteries of pronunciation made crystal clear!

This is a FABULOUS book! I tutor English as a Second Language to Mexican and Japanese students. For a long time I struggled hard to try to figure out how I pronounce difficult sounds in English, with no success. I was absolutely thrilled when I found this book. Susan Cameron explains and demonstrates EXACTLY how the mouth and tongue form the sounds of English and BINGO! My students really GET it now. The mysteries of pronunciation are made crystal clear! I use it for 20 minutes of pronunciation practice at the beginning of every lesson. The DVD is invaluable. There really is no use talking about how to pronounce sounds, here you can SEE how. Susan uses one hand to represent either the roof of the mouth or the bottom of the mouth and the other to represent exactly what the tongue is doing inside the mouth. The audio includes sentences, and the book has long lists of words for further practice.

I only wish there were instructions for more sounds, especially the ones my Japanese students find difficult. Also the sentences use very sophisticated vocabulary, words that less educated Americans don't even know! So I wish the sentences provided used vocabulary just above my students' level, rather than far, far too advanced. Sometimes I define the words for my students, but most of the time I ask them not to worry about it and just practice the sounds.
