Preface
The present volume is an outgrowth of a Conference on Mathematical Tables
held at Cambridge, Mass., on September 15-16, 1954, under the auspices of the
National Science Foundation and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The
purpose of the meeting was to evaluate the need for mathematical tables in the light
of the availability of large scale computing machines. It was the consensus of
opinion that in spite of the increasing use of the new machines the basic need for
tables would continue to exist.

Numerical tables of mathematical functions are in continual demand by scientists
and engineers. A greater variety of functions and higher acciu-acy of tabulation
are now required as a result of scientific advances and, especially, of the increasing
use of automatic computers. In the latter connection, the tables serve
mainly for preliminary sm-veys of problems before programming for machine operation.

For those without easy access to machines, such tables are, of course, indispensable. Consequently, the Conference recognized that there was a pressing need for a modernized version of the classical tables of functions of Jahnke-Emde. To implement the project, the National Science Foundation requested the National Bureau of Standards to prepare such a volume and established an Ad Hoc Advisory Committee, with Professor Philip M. Morse of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as chairman, to advise the staff of the National Bureau of Standards during the course of its preparation. In addition to the Chairman, the Committee consisted of A. Erdelyi, M. C. Gray, N. Metropolis, J. B. Rosser, H. C. Thacher, Jr., John Todd, C. B. Tompkins, and J. W. Tukey.

The primary aim has been to include a maximum of useful information within
the limits of a moderately large volume, with particular attention to the needs of
scientists in all fields. An attempt has been made to cover the entire field of special
functions. To carry out the goal set forth by the Ad Hoc Committee, it has been
necessary to supplement the tables by including the mathematical properties that
are important in computation work, as well as by providing numerical methods
which demonstrate the use and extension of the tables.

The Handbook was prepared under the direction of the late Milton Abramowitz,
and Irene A. Stegun. Its success has depended greatly upon the cooperation of
many mathematicians. Their efforts together with the cooperation of the Ad Hoc
Committee are greatly appreciated. The particular contributions of these and
other individuals are acknowledged at appropriate places in the text. The sponsorship
of the National Science Foundation for the preparation of the material is
gratefully recognized.

It is hoped that this volume will not only meet the needs of all table users but
will in many cases acquaint its users with new functions.

This book is where the term 'Utopia' comes from

This book has been on my reading list for a while, and I finally grabbed a copy to read when I got my Kindle. Thomas More, as well as many other famous men, put to writing a vision of the ideal society. As with most visions of the ideal society, he had some good ideas that were eventually put in place, but he also had many impractical ideas that won't work just due to the nature of man. It was also interesting to see that he came from an era that accepted several social mores such as slavery that today we find unacceptable and were deemed good institutions in his ideal society.

I think my favorite part was the method the Utopians used to minimize the importance of gold, fine apparel, and money. Gold and jewelry were considered baubles only interesting to children. They marked their slaves by bedecking them with gold. He related a story of a foreign ambassador coming to visit the Utopians. They mistook the gold bedecked ambassador as the slave and the plainly clothed slave as the ambassador and treated each as such.

I highly recommend this relatively short book as a glance into how people in the Middle Ages viewed the ideal society and also as a legitimate look at ongoing social problems. More highlights pride as one of the biggest problems facing society. It appears to be a continuing issue.

Classic of Western Civilization

The year 2016 is the five century anniversary of this book, though it was originally pubished in Latin. As such, reading a biography of More that includes 'Utopia' commentary is helpful because of the time frame it was written in and the translation that occurred.

I found it interesting the book was published in Belgium and wasn't available in Britain during More's life, Shakespeare wasn't the only writer to deal with censors.

I am glad I read this after Brexit, More is very critical of leagues and alliances as a loss of power to labour. A quick read that surprises you that a man could give such deep and rational thought to a better society that included labor having secret votes for their leadership.

Interesting tales, particulary the lesser-known "Isle of Pines"

As usual, Oxford does a good job with translations, introductions and notes.

More's "Utopia" is the longest and best of the three works presented in this book, at least as far as fleshing out the details of how a utopian civilization would really look, particularly when situated among other civilizations. But, since most people are familiar with it to some degree, I'll discuss the other two writings in more detail.

Bacon's "New Atlantis" is the least satisfying of the three utopian civilizations. First, it isn't complete, barely beginning before it ends. Second, it seems to be more about scientific specialization (i.e. how the New Atlantic culture has made great strides in various fields of science [e.g. agriculture, astronomy]) than about utopian society per se. It is interesting how Bacon relates these islanders, far from Europe, to the famed ancient Atlantean society.

Neville's "Isle of Pines" is an interesting tale of shipwreck and discovery. A ship sinks near the coast of a faraway island, killing everyone except a man with the last name "Pine" and a few women, one of whom is black. What follows is a fascinating story of old/new-world racism and debauchery. Basically, the Pine fellow starts bedding ALL the women (two of whom, if I recall, are sisters) because, you know, they're not getting rescued any time soon and they've got to keep civilization going. Eventually, they all dispense with the wearing of clothes. Then ALL the women get pregnant and turn into baby factories and everyone breeds like rabbits until there are hundreds of people within one or two generations. The interesting tack that Neville takes is that Pine only sleeps with the black woman at night, she "craftily" sneaking into his bed. In addition, her progeny happen to be the bad apples of the island, which is discussed from the perspective of some visiting sailors many years after the shipwreck. Fascinating view into the European mind from several centuries back.

About the Author
Terry Harrison grew up in Norfolk. His early art education was basic and he never dreamed that he would become an artist. At fifteen, Terry moved to Hampshire and was inspired by a brilliant art teacher. He took O and A levels in art, then won a place at Farnham Art School at the age of sixteen. He became a graphic artist, but continued to paint in his spare time. In 1984 Terry gave up his job to paint full time. He demonstrates to artists' groups and teaches on painting holidays. He has also developed a range of his own brushes and paints. He is the author of many best selling books on painting with acrylics and watercolors. Terry now lives in the Cotswolds. About the Author
Aristotle was born in 384BC. For twenty years he studied at Athens at the Academy of Plato, on whose death in 347 he left, and some time later became tutor to Alexander the Great. On Alexander's succession to the throne of Macedonia in 336, Aristotle returned to Athens and established his school and research institute, the Lyceum. After Alexander's death he was driven out of Athens and fled to Chalcis in Euboea where he died in 322. His writings profoundly affected the whole course of ancient and medieval philosophy.

Good edition of the Greek text with a clear and helpful translation by H. Rackham.

This is a very good edition of the Nicomachean Ethics translated by H. Rackham. The english text (available at Perseus Digital Library) is intended for those who want to read the greek text and use the english as a support, as the english text will often interpret the text and undo many of the obscurities of the original, preserved in more faithful translations as the one of W.D. Ross. For those working with this text I would recomend both Rackham's and Ross's translations.

The greek text is the one of Bekker, revised with the aid of Susemihl (1880), Bywater (1891) and Alpet (1902), and published notes of other scholars (like H.H. Joachim). (The greek text is also available at Perseus.)

Overall, I found this one to be the best edition for scholarly purposes.

As of the book itself - materially - it a is a decent edition. It has a nice binding and a hardcover. The pages are somewhat thin and may get damaged if you just hold the book long enough (especially if you tend to sweat in your hands). The letters are big enough so you can read without difficulty, but you won't have much space in the page to writte comments (unless you can write really small).

The best edition of the Ethics

Still to my mind the best edition and translation of the Ethics. I say this as someone working on his own. Besides the obvious quality of content, the publication is superior: beautifully bound with strong clean paper in a nice sized book that is clear to read.

A good version

Aristotle was for a long time difficult to understand, but I later learned that it was because I had the wrong teachers. Most people I talked to from when I was very young never completely understood it, but they pretended to as a way of justifying certain actions. Among my official professors in university, it turned out that the first only gave me a basic understanding of it, the second had mostly studied new age interpretations, the third gave a repeat of the first, but she had less understanding. When I was finally learning the truth of it from decent university professors, I still wasn't completely certain of what I was learning because of the past confusion, and I wasn't sure where to look for a good translation, as a French translation of Aristotle's works had some bad translation. A former professor who had good knowledge of it recommended this. And now it is all much clearer.

I do not agree with everything that Aristotle wrote and taught, and I have found flaws. But this is a good book to read in order to better understand what he really did say. When a person has problems understanding a professor, others often say to read it yourself, but they often do not give good suggestions of specifically what to read. This is one of the better versions.

Waiting Is Not Easy!

It certainly is not easy to wait! My girls and I have been waiting for this book since we pre-ordered it in April!

For those of you who might be unfamiliar with this series, Elephant and Piggie is a series of easy readers featuring a neurotic elephant and his friend Piggie, who is a nice foil for Gerald. The books are very silly; there is usually a misunderstanding, and quite a bit of comic relief. The text is simple, and the character speak via voice bubbles, using simple language like,

"I have a surprise for you!"
"Yay! What is it?"
"The surprise is a surprise!"
"Oh."

The illustrations enhance the simple text. Elephant and Piggie are put up against a white background. This allows emphasis to be placed on facial expressions and body language. This is a wonderful tool for helping children understand how a character is feeling.

Waiting Is Not Easy is a wonderful entry in the franchise. The snippet of text I shared is from the beginning of the book. Piggie has a surprise for Gerald, and he is very excited. The only problem is that Gerald literally can't deal with waiting, and he gets more and more anxious about the surprise. He groans audibly, and his groan voice bubble even knocks Piggie over. She remains patient with him, and the payoff when the surprise is revealed proves to be worth the wait.

My three girls (7,5,5) loved this story. They giggled at Gerald's impatience, and they enjoyed the surprise. The Elephant and Piggie books don't always have a lesson at the end, so I appreciated that this story conveyed the message that good things come to those who wait.

I would absolutely recommend Waiting Is Not Easy to preschoolers through children in the early years of elementary school. The voice bubble format makes this an ideal story to act out with an emerging reader. I know that we will continue to enjoy this story, just like the rest of the Elephant and Piggie stories.

Gerald and Piggie at their best; a great Willems read

Oh Gerald. Oh Piggie. Why do you always send me and my kids into fits of hysteria!

This latest book by Willems falls in line with many of his masterpieces. As always, sparse on text and thus readable by early readers, but beautifully illustrated and with a sharp wit which will leave big and little readers in stitches. Your kids will love this book. You will love this book (but may not admit it to other adults). On par with his "Pigeon" books, this series is perfect in any household.

A must buy for Willems fans.

Do you like waiting? We think this book is awesome because it is funny! For example, Gerald's GROAN bubbles knock Piggie down. Another reason we like it is because we liked when Gerald yells, "PIGGIE!!!!" We like the ending where Gerald has a surprise for Piggie. When Piggie said, "I cannot wait," we thought, "Oh no! Here we go again!" We think Waiting is not Easy is a great book because it has a great lesson about waiting. You should read Waiting is Not Easy!
