A grand, beautiful book of adventure and history

This wonderful book tells the stories of adventure and bravery that took place across the ages. Even in today's world, the bold, the intelligent, and the plain curious, suffer the afflictions of fools and tyrants who fear all and anything they cannot understand or control. But in ages past, when these blights on the human spirit not only clung to the idea of a flat world, where the water just fell of into the aether, they even punished with death those who dared to dream. Fortunately for us, the brave men and women of history flew in the face of fear and tyranny to pursue the truth and the fire in their own hearts.

For those who love books, not only for the wonders they reveal, but for their physical beauty, this one is a treasure. Printed on thick, quality stock, with vibrant and expertly done photography of navigational objects, charts and maps, illustrations, and more, this book will make proud addition to any library.

By the same publisher, is the book A History of Arctic Exploration. It is a twin sister to this one and I highly encourage the reader of such material to purchase them both. You will not be disappointed!

Not what I was expecting, but still good in ways

First off, this is a BIG and HEAVY book. It's 13 1/2" tall, and would not initially fit on my bookshelf. Luckily, my bookshelf has adjustable shelf levels, so with modifications, I could make it fit. This isn't a book that that you'd want to leave laying around, so I'm glad I could make it fit. I don't have a scale to weight it, but this is by far the heaviest book I own. It's not user-friendly for carrying around, and certainly isn't very portable. The thick pages and plentiful graphics are great, but add to the weight of this beastie.

I was hoping for more of a general nautical book, with nautical terms, descriptions of ship parts/components, descriptions of actual sailing and handling the sea, and coverage of America and New World sailors/privateers/pirates. I really found none of that in this book.

This book is actually narrow in scope, and focuses on navigation in the Old World. There is coverage of the Middle East and Asia, but that's pretty much it. Navigation is the focus, so not much in the way of commerce, privateering, leisure sailing, etc. What the book covers is very deep in scope, and the imagery and graphics are top notch. So if that is your specialty and interest, you'll like this book.

On the other hand, if you're looking for a book that will give you a taste of sea air and the feel of misty winds on your face, this isn't your book. This is a book generated from other books in the depths of libraries. That can be great too - and there's a place for books like this - but again, it wasn't what I was seeking. I found myself getting a bit bored about 1/4 through the book too, as it seems to sometimes repeat what was discussed prior. In summary, this book is a bit of a millstone in my collection, being big and bulky, and also an expensive purchase that I wasn't quite satisfied with (a bit of buyer's remorse).

About the Author
Dr. Rajesh Uthamanthil is the director of Comparative Medicine program at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, WA. He received Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Sciences from Kerala Agricultural University, PhD in Comparative Biosciences from the University of Wisconsin Madison and completed a post doctoral fellowship at Rice University. Dr. Uthamanthil has more than 16 years of experience in animal models of human disease, most of it focused on cancer.

Dr. Uthamanthil also directs the PDX core that support studies using PDX models at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Dr. Uthamanthil has more than 20 peer reviewed publications in the area of translational research, has authored/co-authored two book chapters and has made more than 30 presentations in national and international conferences meetings.

Dr. Peggy Tinkey received degrees in Veterinary Science and Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M University, completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Pathology at Baylor College of Medicine and is a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. She is a Professor of Comparative Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, where she directs the animal research program

Dr. Tinkey has extensive experience in animal models of cancer, with an emphasis of mouse cancer models that includes genetically engineered and mutant mouse models, cell line xenograft models, and patient-derived xenograft models. She has published over 25 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters on animal cancers and cancer models. She combines her expertise in animal models with extensive experience in regulatory medicine and has served on the UTMDACC institutional animal care and use and biosafety committees for more than 20 years.

Dr. Elisa de Stanchina is the Director of the MSKCC Antitumor Assessment Core Facility, and over the past 8 years has overseen its evolution into a state-of-the-art “Mouse Hospital” that fosters preclinical drug development and coordinates efforts from basic scientists and clinicians to ensure that mouse trials effectively mimic treatment plans of human patients. She is an Associate Lab Member in the Molecular Pharmacology and Chemistry Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). Her lab works closely with investigators to establish mouse models of cancer and has developed one of the largest Academic PDX core support programs in the U.S., with an extensive bank of clinically annotated models available to MSKCC Investigators and their collaborators. Her work has resulted in over 65 publications in prestigious peer-reviewed journals and she has recently authored one of the chapters in the new edition of the “Mouse Models of Cancer” book by CSHL Press.

It really is an absolute beginner's guide

It would be wrong for me to penalize this book based on what other reviews said about it. The title says what it is: An absolute beginner's guide. But I was disappointed, largely because other reviewers seemed to indicate this book goes deeper than it does.

I bought it hoping it would really explain and cover things like assigning fixed IP addresses and resolving conflicts that result in messages like "invalid IP" and such. It only barely touches on technical things -- in chapter 19 on "troubleshooting." And it punts by telling you to contact the manufacturer for more information if you have connection problems that aren't simply resolved by the very basic advice offered.

The rest reads like a grammar school introduction to all things electronic, for kids who've never seen a wireless anything or a cell phone or even the Internet or streaming videos. I mean, one chapter could be titled, "Wow, have you seen those new cell phone things? They're amazing! You can, like, drive places and keep talking and stuff!" Another could be titled, "Wow! How about that Internet thing! You can even watch movies on it!"

As far as technical information and setup advice, there is very little in this book that isn't already in the quick start guides included with most any device you might purchase. Just read those and you'll get 90 percent of what this book offers. You don't need to spend money on a book that basically tells you to run the installation wizard and follow the on screen prompts.

However if you really are a complete novice to Internet and electronic and wireless things -- an absolute beginner, just as the title describes -- then this just might be the book for you.

Not just for Beginners

We have had a wireless network for years. Usually there is not much to do, after it is up and running. Miller's book is up to date and basically gives you information about how to wirelessly connect everything in the house to the internet or to another gadget in the house. If a gadget has WiFi, you can run it from anywhere. He also includes information on "Sharing via Cloud". I am sure everybody, but experienced network techies can find something new and useful.

I highly recommend this book....specifically for the uninitiated...a techy will more than likely find it boring...covers everything from home wifi networking, to Bluetooth cell phone hook-ups for your car...I learned quite a bit...money well spent...FYI, this book is an excellent read in Kindle format...not a lot of complex diagrams etc.,.jo'c

Interesting book

Although I enjoyed reading the book the contents is a bit disjointed because the events are not laid out in a chronological order. However, the book reveals what a complex woman the Empress of Austria was. She was a total contradiction of her political views as she despised the very Monarchy that enabled her to travel the world and monetarily accommodated her every whim. But maybe her life would have unfolded differently had she not been forced to marry at 16 years of age. Then again, there are other monarchs who were thrust into the Royal life and did handle their position quite well. Overall, unfortunately the Empress of Austria lived a very unhealthy and unhappy life.

This is a great book with a surprisingly wonderful story. However by the time you figure out where the author Wilmar H. Shirras is leading us the book ends and possible the real story just begins.

A physiatrist stumbles on a secret that children born after a nuclear mishap have expanded intellects.
This of course can be a blessing or a curse depending on how it is handled. There is a much bigger theme of which this is just the core.

As with other readers this book needs to be revisited periodically.

If you like this story you should also like "Starship on Saddle Mountain" It is a different kind of story but also has the general intent of this story.

It is a classical good book to Operative Dentistry. Although Professor Pickard passed away, his book can keep "Eigth Edition". I just read the first part of it only but I will keep on finishing it. I'm just the Ninth edition. Much more concise! It's just irresistable to have a look of it and collect of it. Waiting for the new edition, too.

Joanne Conaghan studied law at Oxford. She is currently a Professor of Law at the University of Kent at Canterbury, having previously taught at the Universities of Exeter in Devon and San Diego in California. Her areas of research include labour law, tort, and feminist legal theory, and she has
