Worthwhile investment for those in CM or GC

I used this book in my CM class as a senior in college. The book is pretty comprehensive and a lot of the info didn't make sense until I actually started in the field of general contracting and construction management. Now the info in the book is understandable. I would recommend the book.

D igitalsignal processing (DSP) has become a core body of material in undergraduateelectrical engineering programs. Several threads branch from this core toenable related disciplines, such as communication systems, source coding,multimedia entertainment, radar, sonar, medical and laboratory instruments, andothers. Multirate signal processing isone of these major threads. Multirate signal processing is the body of materialthat deals with concepts, algorithms, and architectures that embed sample ratechanges at one or more sites in the signal flow path.

There are two reasons to include multirate signal processing in thesolution of a particular signal-processing task. The first is reduction in costof the implementation. The second is enhanced performance of theimplementation. We might also include a third, personal incentive, which is,that it is fun to apply clever concepts to solve problems. We can hardlycomplete a multirate DSP design without a smile and the accompanying thought,“Boy, this is neat!”

Traditional concepts developed in the DSP world are the same asthose developed in the analog-processing world. In both domains we learn anduse concepts such as convolution, Fourier transforms, transfer functions, polesand zeros, and others. When required to distinguish the two approaches we usethe qualifier “discrete” when discussing the DSP version of thesefundamental concepts. The reason the two approaches are so similar is that theyboth emphasize linear time invariant (LTI ) systems for which the toolsof analysis and synthesis are well developed.

Multirate signal processing brings to the designer an importanttool not available to the traditional DSP designer, who to the first orderapplies DSP techniques to emulate analog systems. We note that the interfacebetween the two versions of the world, continuous and discrete, is the samplingprocess. One of the best DSP books on the planet

One of the best DSP books on the planet. fred is a down to earth practitioner of the art of DSP. He's been in the trenches and 'gets it' when it comes to what is possible and what is practical. This is now one of my most cherished texts that would have to pry from my cold dead hands to take from me.

A DSP classic!

Every decade or so a book comes out that distills a lot if scattered knowledge on an important subject into one concise and comprehensible tutorial. This is such a book. It introduces new ideas on better ways to skin the proverbial DSP cat!

This book clearly explains sampling rate switching architectures and how they can greatly reduce processing cycles and simplify digital and analog hardware. I've used a few of these tricks in the past, but what an eye opener to see so many great examples of sneaky DSP.

Fred Harris makes it clear with vivid examples and MatLab illustrations that using multi-rate signal processing moves you into a whole new class of implementations. No longer does one ask, "What sampling rate do I need to satisfy Nyquist? The question is now, "What sampling rate do I need in each section to optimize the design? This book helps the DSP practitioner answer that question. The sampling rate degree of freedom liberates! Use it and prosper!

The Reference Standard for Multirate Processing

I wish this work were available when I was implementing multi-rate, multi stage filters with MSI integrated circuits and a wire wrap gun! But we are now in the FPGA world, and professor harris's work is in tune with today's hardware implementations. His attention to implementation efficiency with realistic comparisons is valuable. My only minor "ding" would be that some of the MATLAB code is not well documented and the results take some effort to interpret. That said, having the MATLAB code is a BIG plus. Even better would be to have Simulink models of the filters.

Wonderful Potato Salad Recipes

I couldn't believe the variety of recipes in this book. Angela Louise wrote about every kind of potato salad imaginable. There are recipes for white potatoes, red potatoes, and sweet potatoes. There are even a couple of recipes that use white potatoes and sweet potatoes together. She has recipes from the USA, Russia, and Greece. This book is a true find for anyone like me who loves potato salad and variety.

I fully enjoyed this book. The various recipes were supporting. I had not tried them yet but look forward to doing so. If you like delicious potatoes recipe, this book offers great healthy recipes. Each recipe is unique, and most are healthy. The recipe directions seem clear and tasty. The instruction is easy to follow!

At first glance, the term ‘metametaphysics’ can be a little off-putting. For most folks, the term ‘metaphysics’ is off-putting, and to add an extra ‘meta’ may seem to border on self-parody. For those of a more ‘scientific’ mind or those who view metaphysics with some suspicion (for which there are both good and bad reasons), ‘metametaphysics’ might as well say ‘armarmchair’ speculation. Slightly awkward terminology aside, metametaphysics is actually what those suspicious of metaphysics should be thinking about, and Tahko’s book is a brilliant guide to a broad and often complex topic that anyone, suspicious of metaphysics or not, should read.

Tahko says that this is the first systematic introduction to metametaphysics available, and as far as I can tell he’s completely correct. There are some well known collections of essays as important articles in collected volumes, but to date there has been a lack of systematic introduction. This volume offers just that – and, for someone like me, who wasn’t as familiar with this subject, this is about as good of an intro as I can imagine being written. There’s no unnecessary jargon – there’s definitely some, but it’s kept bearable. The entire volume feels almost conversational, especially since the majority of the text is overview and interaction with various positions. One almost feels as if the book is a conversation with Tahko on the state of metaphysics, and this is definitely a good thing.

The basic goal of the book is, roughly, to look at and discuss just how metaphysics works – the epistemology, methodology, subject matter, etc. Tahko interacts with a substantial number of writers and thinkers in the contemporary metaphysical scene, but by and large, he appears to largely be answering the kind of thinking that is exemplified in Ladyman and Ross’s ‘Every Thing Must Go‘ (head here for a good review), where metaphysics, if it has any role to play at all, is more or less a lackey for the natural sciences, since Ladyman and Ross don’t think that metaphysics contributes to human knowledge at all. Over the course of the book, Tahko does a couple of things: he shows how the assumptions undergirding that particular viewpoint themselves need to be questioned, develops just how metaphysical debates actually happen, and fleshes out the relationship between contemporary metaphysics and the natural sciences.

Significant amounts of time are spent analyzing things such as ontological commitments and existential quantifiers, ontological grounding and dependence, the fundamental levels of reality (if there are any), metaphysical epistemology and the interplay between science and metaphysics. My personal favourite section was on epistemology, where Tahko spends a good deal of time breaking down just how our modal knowledge ‘works’ (a priori? a posteriori? Essentialist? A combination of all these?) Also enjoyable was Tahko’s interaction with the natural sciences – the examples and thought experiments are all clear and demand no prior knowledge of any specific science (even if they do get a bit technical at times).

If you have any familiarity with analytic metaphysics, then this volume should be fairly easy going for you. There’s nothing outrageously technical, though the chapter on ‘grounding’ can at times be fairly heavy going. However, the best feature by far here is the glossary, where nearly every technical term Tahko uses is presented clearly and concisely. While not exhaustive in terms of definitions (the definitions here are a sentence or two at most) it is extremely helpful for someone like me, for whom ‘existential quantifier’ or ‘quantifier variance’ are not everyday terms. For folks who need a quick reference here and there, this is the ideal tool. Not enough philosophy books provide helpful glossaries – kudos to Tahko for providing one.

There isn’t much here in the way of positive metaphysical positions that Tahko defends – though his own sympathies are clear – and that’s what makes this volume so important. Skeptics of metaphysics will come away not learning what hill Tahko has chosen to die on but just how metaphysics and science can learn from each other and just how metaphysics actually ‘works’ and just how (and what) it contributes to knowledge. Proponents of metaphysics will not come away learning why their position is wrong but how to better think about the meta-attitudes (the value of various metaphysical theories, the nature of the disagreements between different branches of philosophy) that they hold explicitly or implicitly and so be able to move forward constructively in metaphysics.

All in all, this is an easy-to-read and much needed systematic introduction and survey of a prominent topic in philosophy. Tahko is a superb guide, and I highly recommend this volume to anyone interested in philosophy, metaphysics or the relation between the sciences and philosophy/metaphysics.

I found this book to be an excellent introduction to meta-metaphysics and meta-ontology. It's a great resource for anyone in philosophy education or who just likes exploring the vast philosophical terrain.

I gave it four stars because, although presenting many different perspectives from Aristotle to Carnap to Quine, I felt Tahko did not give enough justice to the anti-realist perspectives, as well as the newer "naturalized metaphysics" movement, nor any of the more "Continental" traditions, like Heidegger and Levinas, nor the speculative realism movement. This can understood if the author's goal was to focus on the more a priori analytic metaphysical enterprise, but for anyone who is looking for a more broad text, this might disappoint them. I say "might", because despite its limit of breadth, it still manages to be an interesting and even entertaining read.

Overall, I would recommend this book, but definitely be prepared to take the liberty and pursue some topics in more depth on your own. Tahko did us a service by recommending many resources throughout the book.
